I. WHY DO WE NEED KANDICOMP?
KANDICOMP's MISSION STATEMENT:
KandiComp will be the desirable computing consulting company in the Kandiyohi County area and beyond. Our for-profit efforts will support our foundational service to God and humanity.
We will use gathered and growing expertise to help individuals, organizations and small businesses experience “sweet” computing. With integrity KandiComp will provide our clients with mechanical and intellectual services resulting in functional computer systems and the education to use them effectively.
II. BACKGROUND
Co-founder and President Roy R. Stiff's background in computers began 24 years ago as an assembler for Control Data Corporation. Because he had specialty soldering skills, a high mechanical aptitude and enthusiasm, he was quickly promoted and further trained until he became a computer peripherals prototype builder. He could read schematics, build a circuit board from scratch, and test the components. He could then assemble custom-made parts into finished computer equipment. All this training was on the job. He also studied and applied WW Demming’s “Statistical Process Control” as a way and means to achieving consistent and growing levels of Quality. He did this for nine years.
However, he also believed himself to be called to serve God in ordained ministry; Roy lay-pastored a growing church for over two years; he later went into parish ministry while attending seminary. He performed as a lay pastor and local pastor for a total of over 10 years. During that time and due to his growing computer knowledge and skills, he served as a computerization consultant to local churches: He assisted training churches to choose, set up, and maintain their computers; and helped them grow in computer skills and proficiency.
Roy suffered two heart attacks in 1997, and had to leave parish ministry for something less stressful. He went to work for two local businesses which both needed computer networks to function. He set up, added to, maintained, upgraded, and serviced two Windows / Novell Netware networks. He also programmed, maintained, and upgraded a dedicated UNIX server for one of the businesses. He designed, built, uploaded, and maintained Web sites for each company, and kept their databases current.
The challenges Roy faced seemed daunting. He knew he could do these things if he learned and applied himself, and so he set out to learn what he needed to know. He read voraciously, researched, networked with others willing to share their skills and similar experiences, and did his best to apply what he learned to these new challenges. The need to know, the learning process itself, and Roy's growing sense of confidence and
competence allowed him to effectively serve his employers.
Just as importantly, these things helped Roy gain personal satisfaction that he could be and do whatever he set out to accomplish, and that his real world life experiences provided him with an education on a par with (or sometimes beyond) that of formal classroom learning.
Finally Roy changed companies and became a computer network service technician for
Maracom Corporation
. During nearly five years there, he helped to upgrade their network to keep them on the cutting edge of technological service. Roy performed numerous hardware and software updates and repairs on their network. In addition, he helped train a key graphic artist in the fundamentals of Web design, building, and ranking on the Internet. he also served as Special Projects Representative and received E-Commerce training through
Maracom
at Ridgewater College.
Maracom
offered employees great incentives to purchase their own personal computers over three years ago. Since then, Roy has configured, repaired, and continually upgraded over thirty such computers for employees.
Each year
Maracom
loaned Roy's services out to
Willmar Community Christian School
for several months each year to help them with their network needs. There he's serviced over 100 computers, laptops, and peripherals connected to a Windows Server network, running Terminal Services from two Windows 2003 Servers. He helped set up and c
onfigure Terminal Services and the programs that were to run on it for network use.
Roy's reputation as a computer services provider has grown substantially over the eight years he's lived in
Willmar
, primarily through word-of-mouth. He is presently sought after by many new contacts who have been recommended to him by others in the above-named categories. To this end, to the need to be fiscally accountable for extra income his services have brought in, and in the hope that he may offer greater opportunities to others while benefitting financially from the effort, Roy and his wife Beth have formed KandiComp, LLC.
Computer Service Industry trends demonstrate tremendous growth in the last several years. While the market for computers has flattened, the need for services relating to them has skyrocketed. Web design and E-commerce are becoming “musts” for businesses which seek growth. 20% of all sales (just 5 years ago the percentage was less than 5) happen through E-commerce. Online banking and information sharing are becoming normative. In the midst of this growth is also growth in “cyber-terrorism”- viruses, Trojan-horses, Adware, Spyware, etc., and computer hacking threaten the security, profitability, trust level, and integrity of all persons and businesses. 80+% of all the computer repair work KandiComp does these days is around such cyber attacks on personal or business computers. The days when we mostly installed hardware or software upgrades are passing in favor of security and disaster recovery issues.
III. LOCATION
KandiComp is currently located on the west side of
Willmar
, Minnesota's downtown area. E-mail us at
Support@KandiComp.com
This is a good location because it is so close to the downtown area, (a declining retail hub, but a growing services hub). All service industries now or soon will depend on computers, and we are in a position
to offer many types of computer services. Clients have easy access to us, and we can service their computer needs in a prompt and efficient fashion. We work largely at their locations, but if we need to bring their equipment to our office for servicing, we are close at hand, and that enhances their trust level of our business. It also makes us more truly a community service business both via proximity and logo- KandiComp represents Kandiyohi Computing, and that makes us “one of their own.”
For future expansion we plan to locate an office in downtown Willmar .
